Thomas Brock (1926-2021), American microbiologist studying out-flow channels of hot springs in the Great Fountain Area of Yellowstone National Park, USA. Brock is best known for discovering the bacteria Thermus aquaticus. This bacteria is found in hot springs and can thrive in high temperatures. Thermus aquaticus is the source of a heat stable DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) polymerase called Taq polymerase. This enzyme is used in a process to amplify DNA called polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
