USS Skate, a US submarine, breaks through the ice at the North Pole for the scattering of the ashes of the arctic explorer Hubert Wilkins, 1959. George Hubert Wilkins (1888 - 1958) was an Australian polar explorer, ornithologist, pilot, soldier, geographer and photographer. He proved that submarines were capable of operating beneath the polar ice cap.
