19th century illustration entitled 'The First Vote' by A.R. Waud for the political magazine Harper's Weekly. The illustration shows African American men of different professions, such as a businessman and Union Army soldier, voting. The 15th Amendment to the Constitution granted African American men the right to vote by declaring that the 'right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, colour, or previous condition of servitude.' Published on 16th November 1867.
