Lung cancer cell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cultured Calu-3 lung cancer cell. Calu-3 is a non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell line. About 80% to 85% of lung cancers are NSCLC. The main subtypes of NSCLC are adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma. These subtypes, which start from different types of lung cells are grouped together as NSCLC because their treatment and prognoses (outlook) are often similar. Lung cancer is a common form of cancer, frequently associated with smoking tobacco and exposure to industrial air pollutants. It causes a cough and chest pain and may spread to other areas of the body. Treatment includes surgical excision of the affected areas of the lung, with radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
