The theme on the north frieze is the Battle of the Giants (Gigomachy), namely the battle of the sons of the Earth, the Giants, with the Olympian gods for power. Here a giant is being attacked by a lion that is drawing the chariot of Themis, in Greek religion, the personification of justice, goddess of wisdom and good counsel, and the interpreter of the gods' will. Gigantomachy, the conflict between the old and the new world order, was depicted very frequently in ancient Greek art. It symbolizes the triumph of order and civilization over savagery, barbarism and anarchy. The Giants are heavily armed with helmets, shields, breastplates and greaves, they are attacking the gods with spears, swords and stones. These sculptures do not survive in good condition but vividly display a dynamic artistry.
