Rachel Carson (1907-1964), American marine biologist and author, carrying out marine research with the wildlife artist Robert Hines (1912-1994). Carson is best known for her book Silent Spring (1962), which documented her concerns over the use of synthetic pesticides, including DDT. The book lead to the ban in the US of DDT and to the founding of the grassroots environmental movement. Photographed in Florida, USA, 1955.
