1212950 Portrait of Sir William Benett (oil on canvas) by Penny, Edward (1714-91) (attr. to); 35.7x51.0 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: A label on the back of this picture records that it shows Sir William Benett at the age of twelve. His pose and clothes are just the same as an adult man of the time, except that he is not wearing a powdered wig. The stick construction on the ground and the red decorated handkerchief in the boy\'s hand are probably part of a game, possibly an early form of cricket. The figure jumping over a fence in the background may be running for the ball. Small informal portraits became popular at this time, and often featured a landscape background.); Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums.
