3746290 The Virgin of Guadalupe with the Four Apparitions, 1772 (oil on copper) by Enriquez, Nicolas (fl.1730s-80s); 56.5x41.9 cm; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA; (add.info.: In 1531 the Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared to the converted Indian Juan Diego at the hill of Tepeyac, north of Mexico City. She sent him to Bishop Juan de Zumarraga so he could build a church for her. The bishop twice refused to believe Juan Diego so the Virgin instructed him to gather rare flowers for the bishop as proof. When Juan Diego unfolded his cloak filled with the flowers the image of the Virgin was imprinted on his tunic. An inscription reveals that this copy was sanctified by contact with the original in 1789. ).
