Durer's 'Melencolia I' engraving. The most complex of all Durer's engravings, this work has long confounded scholars seeking to explain its symbolic nuances. Most agree that the brooding, winged figure represents the artistic genius despairing of inspiration. But there is little agreement about the significance of many artifacts, such as the 'magic square' at the upper right, whose columns each add up to 34. Holding her head in her hand, Melencolia, the personification of Melanchony, stares past the busy scene in front of her. The area is strewn with symbols and tools associated with craft and carpentry, including an hourglass, weighing scales, a hand plane, a claw hammer, and a saw. The unusual solid that dominates the left half of the image is a truncated rhombohedron.
