Vesuvius erupted on 7 occasions in the 19th century. The earliest eye - witness account of an eruption of Vesuvius was in 79 AD by Pliny the Elder a Roman naturalist and author, who was overcome by fumes from the volcano and died on the beach at Stabiae. Pliny described numerous animals, minerals and plants in his 37 - volume encyclopedia Historia Naturalis.
