The fact that ***** and his wife, of Ponca City, Oklahoma, are deaf does not hamper their caring for their baby son, Carl Victor. An electronic "baby sitter" listens for them, flashing on a light if the baby cries. The simple device - a microphone, an amplifier and relay to operate a switch, and an ordinary light bulb - was made for them by blind students of the Radio Engineering Institure at Omaha, Nebraska. To use it the Coates simply adjust the controls. When baby's fussing reaches the specified volume point the light flashes on, directing the Coates' attention to the crib as they are doing here, March 17. May 27, 1979. (Photo by AP Photo).
