NASA and Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) images of supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*). Sgr A* lies at the centre of the Milky Way and is located 27,000 light years away from Earth. The main image shown here is a composite made using infrared data from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and x-ray data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). The x-ray data (blue) shows hot gas blowing away from the black hole. The infrared data shows stars (orange) and gas (purple). The inset image in the upper right corner is an EHT collaboration image showing the central dark region (shadow) of the black hole surrounded by a ring of glowing gas warped by the SgR A* own gravity. This image was taken using observations from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a global network of radio telescopes.
