Pierre-Auguste Renoir: Bather Drying Herself (Baigneuse s'essuyant); Pierre-Auguste Renoir; c. 1908; Oil on canvas; Renoir painted the female nude obsessively during the later part of his career. In hundreds of canvases; bathing figures; presented alone or in groups; perform intimate actions like getting dressed; pulling back hair; or drying off. Here; as in the vast majority of these canvases; the bather does not acknowledge the artist/ viewer's presence but remains absorbed in her task; heightening the sense of voyeurism. Skin is soft and velvety-looking; an effect achieved through liquid-thin paint applied in short; delicate strokes; this a hallmark of Renoir's late works.; Overall: 36 7/16 x 29 1/8 in. (92.5 x 74 cm)
