Vincent van Gogh: The Factory; Vincent van Gogh; July-September 1887; Oil on canvas; In the late nineteenth century; the French landscape outside of Paris was becoming increasingly marked by signs of industry. Here Van Gogh depicts a glass factory in Asni鑢es; a suburb northwest of the city where the artist painted frequently in the summer of 1887. A postcard photograph taken around 1900 shows the factory as Van Gogh would have seen it. The round objects stacked along the sides of the pathway are balls of glass awaiting melting inside the buildings. They would have been formed into lantern globes for gas streetlights and interior fixtures.; Overall: 18 1/8 x 21 7/8 in. (46 x 55.6 cm)
