Spain; Andalusia; city of Seville; cathedral of Saint Mary of the See (Seville Cathedral): female bronze statue "El Girardillo" on top of the Giralda (bell tower of the cathedral);In 1196; the 82 m high minaret of the Great Mosque of Almohad Seville was built. After the Reconquista; the tower became the bell tower of the new Gothic style cathedral of Seville. In 1568; architect Hern醤 Ruiz extended the tower to a height of now 104;5 m. It is crowned by a 3;5 m high female bronze figure; called "El Girardillo". As it is a weather flag; it is turning around (Spanish "girar"); giving also the name to the tower: Giralda. This figure was built 1566 - 1568 by Bartolom?Morel according to a model of Juan Bautista V醶quez. It symbolizes the triumph of Christian believe. In 1997; the heavy figure was moved from top of the bell tower for renovations reasons. It was temporarily replaced by a lighter replica which can be admired in front of Puerta del Principe; since 2005.
