Amid the Ancient Ruins of Aspendos in Asia Minor. Oil on canvas. Laid down on carton. 35.5 x 62cm. Framed.
In a wide valley about 40km east of Antalya; on the southern coast of what today is Turkey; rest the ancient ruins of Aspendos. Of the important port of Roman times some buildings have lasted to this day; most impressively the ancient theatre; the stage building of which is the only structure to have survived entirely. In 1885/86 the archeologist Karl Graf Lanckoronski from Vienna organised a study trip to the region of former Pamphylia; bringing along the painter Leopold Bara to document the ancient sites.
Conducted in quick strokes and vibrant colours; the two studies at hand were likely created on one of these journeys.
Art trade; Van Ham.
