She has put up her hair with small curls on her forehead and wears a high-necked dark-lace dress whose neckline and arms are unlined. The center of the frock skirt is embroidered from waist to hem. The keys of the piano; together with the lines of the embroidery; form a diagonal from the bottom left to the top right. Mrs. van Rijckevorsel is turned in her chair and turns to the left (to the right for the viewer) and stares out. The person portrayed has a direct relationship with the painter: Mrs. van Rijckevorsel was his aunt.
