The Rat Poison Seller The rat herb seller; The man stands on a square plinth with the right leg forward; holds a cylindrical cage on a long stick in his left hand and probably a pack of poison he offers for sale. Next to him is a boy walking on a belt that runs over the right shoulder and has a box hanging in front of him; the lid of which is lifted with one hand and the other resting on the box. In the cage; on which three dead rats are hanging; one rat is eating and a second one jumps up against the bars. On the man's left shoulder is a rat attached to a chain; the last link of which is attached to his right little finger. He wears a fur hat and wears a shirt and button-down trousers that are closed with buttons. On top of this a fur lined; at the bottom somewhat frayed; half open mantle with stitched-on addresses; which also occur on the split half sleeves. He also wears stockings and shoes. A fur weitas hangs over his shoulder on a sash; around the waist a sash; in which a heart catcher is inserted; decorated with a miniature head at the top. The boy with a wide-brimmed hat wears a frayed; partially open yak; furthermore stockings and shoes. The box with merchandise shows the arms of Utrecht on the front on the left and that of Amersfoort; seller or rat-poison on the right; Ambrosius van Swol; c. 1660; boxwood; h 26.5 cm h 30.5 cm w 17.0 cm x d 8.5 cm
