Count Carlo Ottavio CASTIGLIONE or Castiglioni (23 October 1785 - 10 April 1849); Italian philologist; orientalist and numismatist. Tireless and meticulous scholar; his best known works are the deciphering of the collection of Kufic coins of the Brera di Brera in Milan; and the revelation and translation of Gothic fragments of the Holy Scriptures; discovered in 1817 by Angelo Mai among the schedules of the Ambrosiana Library. Immortalized in the act of examining an ancient coin; to an irreverent eye of the 21st century it may seem absurdly intent on following a chat on a mobile phone. Marble sculpture by Antonio Galli (January 5; 1812 - September 23; 1861); courtyard of honor of the Palazzo di Brera (restored 2015); Milan 1855.
