Tuscany; San Casciano in Val di Pesa; House Museum of Machiavelli (Casa-Museo Machiavelli); also called 鈥濴`Albergaccio" ("refuge"; "hostel"): inside historic underground tunnel to Restaurant "L`Albergaccio dal 1450"; In 1470; this house came into possession of Bernardo di Niccol貌 Machiavelli (1432 - 1500); father of philosopher; poltiician; diplomat and writer Niccol貌 Machiavelli (1469 - 1527). After having been tortured six times in Florence in February 1513; Niccol貌 went into exile and moved in here with wife and six children. Starting in July 1513; here he wrote his famous work "The Prince" ("De Principatibus: il Principe"). His life in this house is proved by a famous letter; he wrote to his friend Francesco Vettori on 10th od December; 1513. The letter as well describes the tavern right across the road; today restaurant 鈥濴`Albergaccio dal 1450"; one of the oldest in Tuscany; where Machiavelli used to play Tric Trac (Tuscan version of Backgammon) with the pub owner and the village butcher. Both houses are connected via an underground tunnel which can be visited as well as the house of Machiavelli; now museum with wine cellar.
