It was probably put over a hand-formed impasto ash urn as a lid. The urns were placed in a shaft dug in the earth or in the rock. Behind the combination of urn; helmet; belt and weapons is the attempt of anthropomorphization. The comb-shaped helmet; made of bronze; consists of an egg-shaped calotte and a high triangular comb made of two metal sheets joined by flange and rivets. Above the forehead and neck; below the crest; there are three bolts each with three recessed grooves at the base and a cut in the lower surface. They sit on a narrow sheet with wavy side outlines. The decoration on comb and calotte of this helmet is particularly rich. The upper half of the calotte is smooth; the lower half is divided into three relief zones by strips: The upper ridge is decorated by a double zigzag band; the middle one by a row of small humps; the lower one by a field decoration in which smooth fields with central humps alternate with groups of vertical and angular ones. On the crest; which descends to the central ornamental zone of the skull; there is a wider strip at the bottom; filled with narrow vertical lines that follow the skull. At the top and bottom it is framed by a row of humps. The rest of the decoration runs parallel to the outer contours of the crest: it consists of an outer narrow and an inner wider zone; both filled with a row of humps. In the gusset triangle there is a large hump surrounded by three rings and two smaller ones on the sides. This type of helmet; which advanced from the Urnfield culture of the Danube countries into the early Iron Age cultures of Italy; was widespread in the Villanova regions. The majority of specimens originate from southern Etruria; from Veji; Tarquinia and Bisenzio.
