Inner ring of galaxy NGC 1097, Enhanced Resolution Imager and Spectrograph (ERIS) image. The bright spots in the ring are stellar nurseries, dense regions within molecular clouds (nebulae) where star formation occurs. The centre of this galaxy is active, meaning it has a supermassive black hole that feeds off its surroundings. This galaxy is located 45 million light-years away from Earth, in the constellation Fornax. This image demonstrates the incredibly high resolution of ERIS, as it represents a portion of the sky less than 0.03 percent the size of the full Moon. Image obtained by ERIS, a component of the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT).
