Visualisation of annual net surface emissions and removals of carbon dioxide for over 100 countries between 2015 and 2020. This shows the combined impact of fossil fuel emissions and land carbon stock changes. Land carbon stock changes are an indication of changes in the amount of carbon stored in organic matter on land, which is impacted by land use and land use change. Changes such as deforestation lead to the emission of carbon, while improved land stewardship and reforestation lead to the removal of carbon from the atmosphere. Increased carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere contribute to human-caused global warming. The data are estimated from observations of atmospheric CO2 observed by a network of ground-based sites and NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2 (OCO-2).
