Face of a newborn baby with Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS). SSSS is caused by toxins secreted by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria during an infection. The toxin causes the top layer of the skin, the epidermis, to redden, blister and then shed. Treatment is with antibiotics and emollients to soothe the skin.
