The White House, Washington, the residence of the President of the United States, 1860. The mansion of the President of the United States, where the Prince of Wales resided during his stay at Washington, is built of freestone, painted white, and hence it is generally known as the "White House"...It has a front of 170 feet, by 86 feet deep, and is two stories high...The famous White House is a substantial, but not very large, mansion; it contains some handsome apartments, and in the interior decorations and style of furniture presents very little of Republican simplicity... The north front has a portico ornamented with four Ionic columns facing Pennsylvania avenue, and three at the sides. From "Illustrated London News", 1860.
