'Rescued from the Plague; London; 1665'. The painting was inspired by Samuel Pepys' diary entry for 3rd September; 1665; in which he tells the story of a saddler and his wife who; having lost all of their other children to the plague; gave their last surviving child away in the hope of saving the child's life.
