Peculiar galaxy NGC 3256, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image. This galaxy is located 100 million light years from Earth, in the constellation of Vela. NGC 3256 is the result of a past galactic merger, which has created its distorted appearance. This makes it a good site for researching starbursts caused by a much higher rate of star formation than usual. This optical image was obtained with the HSTs Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3).
