Illustration of US astrophysicist Adam Guy Riess (born 1969). Riess shared the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics (with Schmidt and Perlmutter) for his work on supernovae that provided evidence of the nature of the expansion of the universe. Reiss studied at MIT and Harvard, obtaining his doctorate in 1996. The work that won him a share of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics was his joint leadership (with Brian P. Schmidt) of the High-z Supernova Search Team. Key findings included evidence for an accelerating expansion, leading to the dark energy-dark matter model of cosmology. Other shared awards for this work include the Shaw Prize in Astronomy (2006), the Gruber Cosmology Prize (2007) and the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics (2015). Reiss was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2009.
