Illustration of the French AIDS researcher and virologist Francoise Barre-Sinoussi (born 1947). In the 1980s, Barre-Sinoussi contributed to the discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). In 2008, she was jointly awarded a share of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for this work.
