Illustration of the British biophysicist Richard Henderson (born 1945). Henderson and colleague Nigel Unwin were the first to successfully determine the structure of a membrane protein (bacteriorhodopsin) using electron microscopy in 1975. He has gone on to develop imaging and statistical techniques to use electron microscopy to find the atomic structure of proteins. Henderson was awarded a share of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, along with Jacques Dubochet and Joachim Frank, for his work in electron microscopy.
