The upper limb of the Sun setting turns blue just before it slips behind Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii. Note also the touch of violet light and the green beads at the ends of the solar segment, all caused by dispersion. This blue fringe of light (commonly called the Blue Flash) only occurs in very clear and transparent air, usually at altitude. This photo was taken at an altitude of 4,200 feet.
