He was imprisoned in Bedford Jail for much of the period from 1660 to 1677. His crime was to have preached at open-air meetings, which challenged the authority of the Church of England. Whilst in Bedford Jail, he wrote \'The Pilgrim\'s Progress\' (published 1678). This symbolic story of a religious journey was very popular in the Victorian period. ); 穢 Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums; English, out of copyright.
