Taken from its left face looking towards the salient angle, looking South, September 1855. Watercolour and pencil by William Simpson (1823-1899), Crimean War, 1855. Although the British twice failed to take the Redan, the French capture of the Malakhov left Sevastopol untenable and in the course of the following night the Russians evacuated the town on the south side of the harbour. The fighting inside the Redan on 8 September had been desperate and by the time Simpson executed his painting a degree of tidying-up had taken place. Reproduced as Plate 20 in Simpson?s ?Seat of War in the East?, Second Series, published by Paul and Dominic Colnaghi, London, 1856.); by National Army Museum .
