Close_up of pupae rounded on the body of a caterpillar parasitized by a wasp. Some species of wasp lay eggs on living animals such as this caterpillar. The wasp typically injects venom, anti_immune chemicals and digestive enzymes into the caterpillar when it lays its eggs. When the eggs hatch, the larvae feed on the tissues of their still_living host. They then pupate before emerging as adult wasps. The caterpillar invariably dies. Filmed in the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador.
