Springtails (Collembola) are tiny wingless arthropods about the size of pinheads that occur in tremendous numbers in soils but are seldom seen. They possess six legs and were once classified with insects, but scientists now group them in a separate class which includes protura and diplura. Springtails like moisture and feed on fungi, algae, mold, and decaying vegetation.
