Free-swimming vorticella protozoa, light microscopy. These single-celled organisms are usually anchored to a substrate by a stalk. However, they can detach themselves if the environment becomes inhospitable. The cilia (tiny hair-like structures) attached to the head are used to capture food and also for movement.
