Iodine test for double bonds. Iodine solution can be used to detect for the presence of carbon-carbon double bonds within unsaturated organic molecules, here cyclohexene. Iodine molecules can add to the double bonds in an addition reaction known as halogen-addition or halogenation. The resulting molecule is known as a haloalkane. When this occurs, the dark brown colour of the iodine solution is decolourised to a lighter brown yellow colour.
