Animation of a close_up of the Great Red Spot on the planet Jupiter. The Great Red Spot is a huge storm system, more than twice the size of Earth, which has persisted on the planet for hundreds of years. Its red colour varies over time, and it is not known exactly what chemicals are responsible. The lighter clouds are formed of ammonia ices, although it is not known with certainty what chemicals are responsible for the darker belts.
