Animation of a Higgs boson event in the Compact Muon Solenoid CMS detector in the Large Hadron Collider LHC at CERN. This animation shows a ZZ event 7 TeV data, seen in 2011, in which a Higgs boson is produced, then rapidly decays to two Z bosons, each of which decays in turn to two heavy muons. Detection of the four muons grey lines with masses consistent with the Z and Higgs bosons provides strong evidence that a Higgs was indeed produced. On 4th July 2012, researchers at the LHC announced that they had discovered a new particle with properties consistent with the Higgs boson.
