Making nylon. Sebacoyl chloride is reacted with 6, 6-hexandiamine (hexamethylenediamine), to give the polymer, nylon-6, 10. This is an example of condensation polymerisation. 2 mL of sebacoyl chloride is dissolved in 10 mL of cyclohexane, a non-polar solvent. A small sample of hexamethylenediamine (0.15 g) is dissolved in 10 mL of 2M sodium hydroxide solution. The two solutions are then mixed without stirring. At the surface of the resulting solution, fibres of the polymer Nylon-6, 10 form and can be drawn out of solution. The above solutions can yield in excess of 5 metres of nylon-6, 10 fibre.
