Peridinium motile dinoflagellates, light microscopy. Peridinium (yellow) measures 30-70 micrometres in length and is covered in a thick plates (known as thecal plates) made of cellulose. The cells contain chloroplasts, which use light to make energy in a process known as photosynthesis. Dinoflagellates are one of the largest groups of marine eukaryotes.
