Cross-bedded sandstone on Mars. View panning across part of the Stimson unit, a feature on a lower slope of Mount Sharp, in Gale crater on Mars. Large-scale cross-bedding such as this is common in petrified sand dunes. Sets of bedding laminations lie at angles to each other. Such crossbedding is often found in wind-deposited sandstone. It shows how the pattern of sedimentation has altered over time due to changing flow directions. The scene combines multiple images taken with both cameras of the Mast Camera (Mastcam) on Curiosity on August 27th 2015.
